Tonalist Landscape Painting

Thursdays, 8 weeks
To
9:30 am
12:30 pm
No Class on Thursday, May 16

The Tonalist movement in late 19th-Century American painting was influenced by the French Barbizon painters and is exemplified by the later paintings of George Inness. As a reaction to both the tight academic painting in France and the crisp, detail-oriented paintings of the American Luminists, Tonalism was inspired to create a poetic and emotional response to the natural landscape.

This class is for intermediate and advanced level painting students to explore the use of an opaque underpainting combined with scumbling and glazing techniques in order to produce unified, evocative paintings.

This class will include a visit to MAM’s galleries during class time to learn from artists on view and be inspired.
