Whittling: 2-Day workshop
Whittling: 2-Day workshop
Join us for a hands-on introduction to the timeless craft of whittling at the Montclair Art Museum's Yard School. Led by experienced instructor, and professional wood whittler Rick Ladd, this two-day class will teach you the fundamental techniques of shaping wood with simple hand tools. You’ll learn the five basic cuts, how to keep your knives sharp, and the art of the primitive craft. With an emphasis on safety and precision, you'll practice these skills on scrap wood before moving on to a guided project where you’ll carve a small bird over the course of this two-day workshop.
Whittling is a relaxing and fulfilling way to slow down and appreciate the craft of woodworking. Drawing inspiration from styles popularized during the Great Depression, you'll discover the joy of creating intricate designs from a single piece of wood, without the need for glue or advanced tools. By the end of the course, you'll have developed the confidence and skills to pursue whittling independently, crafting unique, handmade items to cherish or gift to others.
See the Yard School Policies for complete health and safety information.
