Introduction to Painting, Step by Step
Using oil or acrylic paints, students will learn the basics of painting in easily digestible stages. You will learn how to set up a palette, use painting mediums and brushes, mix colors, create correct values, and understand the principles of good composition. Of particular benefit is a logical and almost foolproof method for mixing colors correctly. Students will receive multiple instructional handouts to clarify and reinforce what is learned in class. In addition, the work of old and contemporary masters is discussed each week as it relates to student work.
Those taking the class should have some basic drawing skills. Students will receive a list of materials needed prior to class. All materials must be brought to first class.

Janet Boltax
Janet Boltax has always been powerfully drawn to portraiture and figurative art. During the past 10 years, she has been working on a series of oil portraits in which the paintings are accompanied by interviews she conducts with the sitters. They include 25 portraits of people over 90, 12 portraits of two transgender individuals as they transition, double portraits of identical twins, and others.
She has had numerous solo exhibits of her paintings throughout the U.S., and is also an accomplished printmaker and collagist. Most recently Janet had an extensive article about her work published in the September issue of Artists Magazine along with an online segment which can be accessed here.
She has been teaching art for the past 15 years; the last 10 of them at MAM. Janet loves to teach and is continually striving to introduce new techniques and methods in order to help her students progress and excel in their work."
